The Scotch Plains Garden Club is a diverse group of men and women coming together with a mission to beautify Scotch Plains.
When my husband and I moved to Fanwood in 2001, our yard was barren so the first thing I did was plant some daffodil bulbs along our fence. Growing up, my father was an avid flower gardener and our yard was always bursting with color. Many of the plants I have in my garden could also be found in my father’s garden. Over the years, I have planted more and more flowering plants with the goal of having something blooming all season long. I love being surrounded by flowers and working in the garden is an activity I enjoy. I learn by trial and error, if something does not bloom, I replace it with something new. Most of my flowers are perennials and I like to supplement with annuals for long lasting color. I develop my gardening plan during the winter and every spring I take several days off of work to buy and plant my spring plants. My husband has developed an irrigation system that helps keep everything happy during the hot summer days and my teenage boys help carry the heavy dirt and planters. The biggest problem I have is finding a place to put the new plant I just bought! Gardening brings me great joy and I think my father would be proud. I am honored to have my garden chosen as the Garden of the Month by the Scotch Plains Garden Club.
We are pleased to share that this year’s spring blossoms are the kickoff to the ‘Garden of the Month’ contest for all Scotch Plains and Fanwood homes.
The contest will run from May through October and is sponsored by the Scotch Plains Garden Club. We are looking for standout landscape gardens that feature flowers, trees and any other foliage or hard scape that enhances the beauty of the home, neighborhood and our town.
Winners will be presented with an award display for their lawn and acknowledged through our town communication platforms. Names and addresses will only be shared if approved by the homeowner.
All gardens that can be viewed from the street are eligible. For safety and privacy, fence entry to see the garden will not be permitted. Professionally landscaped gardens are also ineligible.
The Garden Club will have 2 roaming assessors looking for pretty gardens. We welcome nominations too. Nominations can be sent to scotchplainsgc@gmail.com.
Any questions about the program can be directed to Sarah Seeney or Michele Gardella. They can be reached through the Scotch Plains Garden club website.

On May 16th, 2022 the Scotch Plains Garden Club in conjunction with Mayor Josh Losardo’s Monarch Butterfly pledge, planted a variety of plants alongside the Municipal Building to create a habitat that members of the community will be able to enjoy and help attract pollinators.
On September 20, 2023, the Scotch Plains Garden Club, co-founded by the late Councilwoman Rose Checchio, dedicated a new meditation garden in her name at the Frazee House Park. The garden, open to all looking for quiet spot to reflect in nature, was designed, planted and funded under the leadership of the Scotch Plains Garden Club and fulfilled Rose’s vision to bring a meditation garden to the community.
Each Holiday season the Scotch Plains Garden Club organizes a Design a Wreath event at Shady Rest where attendees are guided throughout all phases of wreath construction and design with holiday decorations. Check back later this year for more information on our 2023 event.
